Best of the East Bay 2016

Lady Ryan is a busy woman.

She’s a fixture in the queer party scenes in Oakland and San Francisco, a mainstay (and one of the few female DJs) in Oakland’s underground hip-hop scene, and is also involved in other events that celebrate the African Diaspora.

As one of the busiest DJs around the Bay this summer, DJ and vocalist LadyRyan has played close to twenty events in just this past month alone. Recently entering her tenth year as a full-time DJ, her self-described “well-rounded in musical genres” and “blended beats, paced storytelling” style fittingly won her East Bay Express’ Best DJ Who Dabbles in Every Scene 2016 accolade. She’s is also a founding member of Soulovely, a daytime monthly in Oakland that empowers and celebrates the QPOC community with rhythms representing all cultures and orientations.

DJ Lady Ryan is a trailblazer and leader in the local DJ scene, on both sides of the bridge, going on years now. In the past, the Express has celebrated many of her dance nights, such as her day-party series Soulovely, which goes down every second Sunday, and on special occasions (such as the July 29 Soulovely X Peaches crew collaboration at El Rio).

15 Creatives in the Bay Area you should know about!

DJs often get written off of the "creatives" lists, but they're the ones who keep parties going with their curatorial skills. DJ D-Sharp (also from the Bay) is deservedly getting lots of shine as the Golden State Warriors official DJ. But DJ Lady Ryan has been kicking great mixes and throwing great parties for nearly 10 years, representing for the ladies in a male-dominated industry.

During Oakland Pride last month, a diverse crowd of mostly women packed into the New Parish for Soulovely, a daytime party that takes place on second Sundays during the summer.
